Aircon mould treatment across Cairns.
Anti-microbial fog treatment for tropical mould species, HEPA filter replacement, drain-pan biocide. The annual mould treatment isn’t an upsell — in the Cairns wet-tropics it’s the difference between a clean unit and a unit pumping Cladosporium spores into your living room every time the fan kicks on. $80–$180 as an add-on to a clean; $180–$280 standalone.
The Cairns tropical-mould protocol.
The two species that matter in Cairns.
Cladosporium and Aspergillus are the two tropical mould species that consistently colonise aircon evaporator coils and drain pans in the wet-tropics climate zone. Both thrive in the 25–30°C and 70–95% humidity conditions that Cairns sits in for most of the year. Cladosporium shows up as the dark olive-green to black biofilm you can see on the coil; Aspergillus colonies are often less visible but produce spores that affect indoor air quality. Asthma sufferers, kids with allergies, and elderly residents are the first to feel it.
Why it has to be annual recurring.
A one-off mould treatment buys you 10–14 months of clean air, then the spore load rebuilds and you’re back where you started. The wet-tropics environment is too aggressive for a one-time fix. Every annual or 6-monthly clean we do on a Cairns unit includes the mould treatment as standard for that reason — not as an upsell, but because skipping it makes the rest of the clean pointless within a year.
The treatment protocol.
- Coil chemical clean first — biofilm has to be removed before biocide will adhere properly
- Drain pan flushed; condensate line cleared
- Drain pan biocide applied (food-grade, EPA-registered anti-microbial)
- Anti-microbial fog treatment via cold-fogger into the internal cavity, drawn through the fan
- HEPA filter replacement (upgrades the standard plastic mesh; recommended for asthma/allergy households)
- 15–20 minute dwell time before power restored
- Test run with sniff-check on the supply air at the outlet
When to call us early.
Don’t wait for the annual service if you’re smelling sour, musty air every time the unit kicks on, or if anyone in the house is showing new allergic-type symptoms (sinus congestion, sore throats, coughs) that get worse when the aircon runs. We can fit a standalone mould treatment within the week. Pair with a full split-system clean or ducted service for the best outcome.
Pricing & cadence.
$80–$180 as an add-on to a clean we’re already doing. $180–$280 standalone (covers a single split-system head or one ducted return). The annual service plan bundles the mould treatment into the yearly visit at no additional cost — cheapest way to keep it recurring without forgetting.
